Lesson 1: Why Does the College Essay Matter?

Why does the college essay matter and what are admissions officers are looking for in your admissions essay? Your college essay journey starts here.

Are you asking yourself:

  • How much does the essay play into an admission’s officer’s decision?
  • Where does the essay fit into the scheme of the college application as a whole?
  • What does admissions want to hear from college applicants?
  • Do admissions officers even read these things?

Lesson Summary:

In the increasingly competitive college admissions landscape, more students are applying to college than ever before. Millions of students hailing from all over the world apply to schools in the United States every year, with acceptance rates to the country’s most elite academic institutions reaching record lows. For its class of 2022, Harvard only accepted 4.59% of applicants. (That’s not a lot!) Stanford accepted a whopping 4.3%. (Neither is that!) Whether you are applying to the Ivy League, the Big Ten, a small liberal arts school or something in between, it is no longer enough to meet a school’s grade and test score requirements. Students need to find a way to set themselves apart from similarly qualified applicants. (This is where we come in!)

The students who do get into the colleges of their choice use all the tools at their disposal, including the essay – the one element of the college application you can affect in real time. (Like right now!) Mastery of the personal statement, be it for the Common Application, the Coalition Application, the UCs or any other application system, gives you a distinct advantage in the admissions game. But how do you make yourself memorable, showcase your ability to contribute to a community and put your personality on display? Set the stage and make the most of this unique opportunity to talk to admissions in your own voice with Lesson 1: Does the College Essay Even Matter?

This lesson will teach you:

  • The true purpose of the college admissions essay
  • What admissions officers are looking for as related to topic and theme
  • How to find the missing pieces in your application and use the essay to fill them
  • The secret to using the college essay to your greatest advantage

And so much more!
